Resources for Educators
Below are links to regional, state, and nationwide resources that support educational efforts involving many aspects of natural resource conservation along the Kittatinny Ridge and beyond. Many of these organizations and agencies provide environmental education programs, offer curriculum assistance, or have a strong volunteer base that contributes to citizen science initiatives. School-community partnerships with these groups can enhance learning, and develop in students a sense of stewardship for our environment by providing meaningful, standards-based, outdoor experiences and field studies.

Backyard/Schoolyard Habitat
A great way to illustrate to students the value of native plants to Pennsylvania wildlife is to create or enhance schoolyard habitat. This is an increasingly popular type of multi-year project that creates important living and nesting places for birds and other wildlife as more and more of our land is converted to impervious surfaces or turf grass. Students learn lessons in habitat evaluation, natural history, planning, mapping, budgets, and biology, making these projects naturally multi-disciplinary.

Regional Recreational Opportunities
These links provide information on hiking, fishing, hunting, boating, and other activities that will develop and nurture students’ (and educators!) enjoyment of the outdoors. Combining hiking or boating with field studies gives students a chance to become familiar with the natural resources around them, and encourages them to pursue outdoor interests on their own. For regional trail club lists, visit the Keystone Trails Association and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. For other regional outdoor recreation links, see below.
