Join Damien Ruffner, Audubon Mid-Atlantic’s Program Manager for The Discovery Center, and Kate Olsen, Assistant Curator of Behavioral Husbandry and Conservation at the Elmwood Park Zoo, for an introduction to the wonderful world of birding as part of this year’s Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) festivities.

Participants will learn where to find birds, what equipment to use (and how to use it), as well as what to look for. Then, head out with Damien and Kate to explore Mill Grove and participate in the GBBC—a global bird census conducted by bird enthusiasts on every continent.

This hands-on experience is a great opportunity to sharpen your birding skills while identifying, counting, and submitting observations that help scientists better understand and protect birds worldwide.

While you’re here, sample a selection of bird-friendly coffees grown in ways that protect critical habitat for birds wintering in Central and South America, and learn how you can help keep birds safe throughout their entire life cycle.

All ages and experience levels are welcome. Participants should dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear.

A limited number of binoculars will be available to borrow.

Please register here so we know to expect you.
