Location Details

The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual event where veteran and novice birders come together to document and share bird-sightings in their communities. Bird enthusiasts on every continent will be watching birds this winter weekend, counting each species they observe, and submitting their data.
Join in the fun with Damien Ruffner, Audubon Mid-Atlantic’s Program Manager for The Discovery Center, and Nikole Koenig, the Elmwood Park Zoo’s Education and Camp Program Coordinator, for an Introduction to Birding session followed by a guided Great Backyard Bird Count bird tour.
You’ll learn where to go to watch birds, what equipment you’ll need, how to use it, and what to look for first, before heading off to explore Mill Grove with Damien and Nikole as part of this global census.
Don’t miss this great opportunity to hone your birding skills while also identifying, counting, and submitting info that will help us better understand and protect birds around the world.
Light refreshments, including Smithsonian Bird Friendly coffee from Dean’s Beans, will be available.
All ages and experience levels are welcome. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather, including appropriate footwear.
A limited number of binoculars will be available to borrow.
Please register here so we know to expect you.
Note: There are TWO program sessions to choose from: 9:00am-11:00am or 1:00pm-3:00pm.
